Welcome back 8th graders!
8th Grade U.S. History
Students who left the Old World (Europe) and crossed the great Atlantic Ocean to the New World (America) will see many awesome things. They will help Cpt. John Smith build a settlement called Jamestown along the James River. There they will meet some Powhatan Indians like Pocahontas! If they survive the cold winter months known as "starving time" they can visit other colonies in the making. After the French and Indian war, students will get hit with high taxes from Mother England to help pay for the war debt. They may not act too kindly to these taxes and may want to join the Sons of Liberty and rebel. They may even stop for tea at the Boston harbor and have a party. "THE BRITISH ARE COMING" Hopefully the kids will be a patriot and join up in the Continental army led by Gen. George Washington to fight the Red coats! If they survive the Revolutionary War, they can help form a new country called the United States.
The British are coming AGAIN! This time for the War of 1812. The students may see the British set fire to the White House. Later, after France sells us some land named after one of their old Kings, King Louis, the kids can journey on an expedition with Lewis and Clark to find out what is in the Louisiana Territory and what lies further west to the Pacific Ocean. Don't tell them that there are some HUGE mountains (Rockies) in their way that they must cross to reach the Pacific Ocean. The students will be "common men" and help Andrew Jackson win the Presidency! Some kids may be awesome Tennessee volunteers and head to Texas with Sam Houston and Davy Crockett. Warn them to watch out for Mexican Gen. Santa Anna as they arrive near a Spanish mission called the Alamo.
While some students are in Texas, others may "go west young men" and search for gold in "them there hills" in California.
Later, friends may soon become enemies as they take sides in the American Civil War. After the war, all students can help clean up the war mess during the Reconstruction period.
